HANABIRA SOLUTION FORMAL ARGUMENTS

FORMAL ARGUMENTS

This is a follow-up to the proposal post, for characters to ICly argue to Youmi, Nama, and Doro why Hathaway's proposed solution is a good idea. The winning vote was to propose the empresses marry each other, so all arguments must be in support of this solution. Arguments are due 28 February 23:59 UTC.

WHAT DO I DO?
Submit a unique argument for why the empresses should marry in the comments below. Arguments must be between 50-250 words and must be submitted as a summary of what your character would ICly say. Characters may submit arguments in a group or solo. There will be a subthread for anyone looking to group up below!

UNIQUE ARGUMENT?
This means that your argument should not be for the same reasons as anyone else. Because each submission must be a unique argument, you may only be involved in one comment, so choose carefully!

For example, if the solution was to make the Hanabiran national animal a hamster, you could not argue it should be because hamsters are cute if that was already someone's argument; you must choose a different argument, such as hamsters' propensity for chewing wood would be a boon to the logging industry.

You may choose a related topic as well; for example, hamsters being cute because they are small if someone argued that hamsters are cute because they're soft.

WHAT ARGUMENTS NEED TO BE MADE?
Nama and Youmi must be given solid reasons why their marriage will benefit each empress and empire. If you need help thinking of something they could offer each other, looking over the dossier description of each empire may help.

THE SOLUTION WAS ALREADY VOTED ON. WHY DO WE NEED ARGUMENTS?
The mods will be using an algorithm to determine how effective the solution is. What the empresses think of it and how successful it is depends on both quantity and quality of the arguments, as well as other ~secret~ factors. In other words, if only one person submits an argument (and that argument is "because I like hamsters"), the solution will fail. So get brainstorming!

I DIDN'T VOTE FOR IT, BUT I STILL WANT TO ARGUE FOR IT. CAN I?
Absolutely! Characters who decide to help the majority despite their qualms may certainly argue for it.

WHAT IF MY CHARACTER DOESN'T AGREE?
If your character wouldn't argue for the marriage solution, then they certainly don't have to! If they would actively argue against it or for a different solution, you may handwave that they did, but we are only accepting arguments for the winning solution.

Hey! I have a question about the number of arguments. Is it a number thing or a "cover all the bases effectively" thing?

WEDDINGS (by Daenerys and Loki, with Veronica's argument being separate but complementary)

[personal profile] conqueress 2018-02-25 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Despite your competing claims, you desire peace." Each Empress is wise enough to see that war would be detrimental to their people, as well as to the Flowerlands.

"You respect one another." Nama sought no retribution for the Spring Festival attack; she placed the decision into Youmi’s hands. In return, Youmi proclaimed to her people that escalation would not be tolerated. Marriages built upon respect beget peace and prosperity.

"A wedding between you shall mean a wedding between your empires."
  • Youmi has ruled for a decade, overseeing seafaring ventures, the arts, and cultural innovation. The blood of warriors runs through Nama's veins, holding rule over a strong and proud people. These qualities enrich one another.
  • Queenship will not be threatened through marriage: Show the people that they are committed to a peaceful bond, in law and symbol, reducing fear for the coming change.
  • The Sea Clan has established trade across the sea. Let the Mountain Clan mount voyages overseas to forge new partnerships.
  • The Sea Clan has ably defended itself, yet the Mountain Clan's aid in war would prove invaluable.
  • United clans are paramount in times of famine, sickness, or invasion.
  • Consider a new manner of succession. Wedding a member of their own blood to one another would prevent either empire from claiming a child for their own heir. Elsewise, perhaps choose two women in a similarly balanced union.
  • Let incentives be offered to the people before the wedding announcement, to keep them soothed and discouraged from joining rebel factions.

TRADE

[personal profile] datapoint 2018-02-25 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Aizawa and Aloy will be arguing that unification will benefit both empires in terms of trade.

While both empires have access to natural resources, combining them both will allow each unfettered access to the other's geographically rare assets. Of particular note is the Sea Clan's access to fish and pearls -- the latter of which Aloy can provide physical evidence of, having been provided a sample of two massive pearls from pearl divers.

In addition to gaining each other's resources, merging the empires will eliminate the skirmishes in the Flowerlands, reducing the risk of travel between the Empire of the Crashing Wave and the Land of Celestial Mountains, cutting down on costs all around. They will also have the additional benefit of each other's foreign trading partners for expanded routes and customers. Aizawa will further argue that unifying the empires in this way and creating a free-flowing trade would produce a robust shared economy, thereby bringing stability and prosperity.

REBELLION (ft. everyone in support under the rebel scum subheader)

[personal profile] mitthrawnaruto 2018-02-26 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
'We understand why Empress Nama might hesitate to accept marriage as a suitable solution: her society values strength through victory, and the rebels at the Heavenly Summit reinforce this belief. It is entirely possible that they will struggle to view unification as a valid path to peace, and as a young empress, she must consider that those very same rebels might see her as a traitor who is selling out their people by compromising with a clan that threatens their way of life and their sovereignty. All evidence thus far suggests that these insurgents are poorly organized, unified by a sense of expectation and righteousness — this cannot be allowed to calcify into a single, organized movement rather than attempts at inciting chaos as punctuation for their singular demand.

Consider then that defying them in and of itself is an act of strength. One that must be thoroughly maintaned.

We therefore offer assurance that should the Empresses choose to wed, Ophelia will provide any necessary assistance to the already considerable efforts of both kingdom's combined forces in subduing any remaining resistance. Furthermore, focus must also be set aside for publicly reassuring the Mountain Clan's people that their traditions and way of life will continue on, despite this political shift, as a means to take the edge off the rebel's legitimacy and momentum.

We are confident that with the rebellion in check, and with prolonged encouragement from governing officials as relations between your kingdoms flourish, that this is indeed the best course of action for all parties involved.'

MILITARY

[personal profile] cachemoney 2018-02-27 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Fiona, Lucina, and Zarya will be aruging that unification will benefit both empires in terms of strengthening each other's military.

Each empire has different, but equally strong military powers that, on merging, would now belong to each other as well. The Sea Clan's naval expertise would be useful for the landlocked Mountain Clan, and the Mountain Clan's overall military prowess would be a boon for the Sea Clan. Of particular note is the Mountain Clan's immediate action during the ambush at the festival, which surely cut down on the number of casualties.

(Zarya in particular is so passionate about this argument that she has tears in her eyes, if that will tug at their heartstrings.)

Cultural Assimilation

[personal profile] refashioned 2018-02-27 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Veronica Lodge, Jason Grace, and Scott Summers are in on this:

You may not realize it since we're an eclectic and boisterous bunch and surely that can only be indicative of a single origin, but we come from many places. I've learned that my worldview and my colleagues' worldviews are radically different. We may be working toward the same goal, but we still need to interact and understand one another.

My colleague Jason comes from a nation that was once opposed to another nation until a greater threat made them unite. Knowing that they would need strong leaders to weather the circumstances, they arranged an exchange of leaders to learn about each other's culture and establish a bond of trust. It was successful, which I believe is encouraging.

Where both of your nations complement each other best is in the tradition of strong matriarchies. The Sea Clan is more progressive, but the Mountain Clan can teach them about upholding tradition. Valuing where you've come from is just as important as where you're going.

As for for how to implement cultural exchange:

  • Maintain both capitals, rotate between them for visibility.
  • Nobles travel with these envoys to mingle.
  • Patronize artists from both nations to celebrate each other's cultures.
  • Have festivals to show that you're unafraid of what might come of them.
  • Maintain the same celebrations and holidays.
  • Set up Sea Clan-influenced schools in the Mountain Clan and vice versa. Set up merit programs for each, with promised accolades upon completion.

    THE PEOPLE

    [personal profile] reposing 2018-02-27 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Alucard, Lissa, Inuyasha, and Ginko will be submitting the following:

    "My ladies,

We've no doubt that this has been a trying time for the both of you. What we have to say is a plea from our respective experiences in similar matters. If there is even a fraction of an opportunity to help bring peace to you and your people, then we will gladly do what we can to assist you.

There are many benefits that I've no doubt that my fellow foreginers have submitted to you. While we certainly agree with many of their fine points, I know that there is ultimately the most important thing that one must consider. That is your people, most of all. A nation is nothing without the people to hold it together. Right now, I am certain that they are afraid and confused, to find themselves with two regal Empresses rather than one. I beg you to not begrudge the warriors who held Empress Nama hostage, for their actions were out of uncertainty and fear for their future, a misguided action of loyalty. Bringing your people together in unity will quell some of those concerns. It is not a perfect solution, but it will no longer beg the question of who truly rules.

You both do. You both deserve to. You both deserve the chance to bring joy to your people.

Infighting and war will only bring about misery. For myself, this is why I became engaged to the noble and fair Lucina, to quell our uneasy relations with our countries. Lissa, my dear friend and who also has had experience in these matters, has watched her people's joy diminish under the pressure of war, and they lost their faith and trust in their rulers.

I encourage you both to unite as one. A marriage, should you choose to accept it, would be the beginning to strengthen yourselves and your people. I hope you don't see this as a lecture, but rather as encouragement to help your empires."

    [personal profile] dbag 2018-02-28 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Rhys will be arguing (alone, because nobody likes him) that Nama and Youmi could benefit each other politically.

Youmi is an experienced leader, having ruled pretty strongly on her own for a while; on the other hand, Nama seems to have a reputation as a bit of a weak leader. Nama could learn from her, and have Youmi's strong support behind the decisions she makes so nobody questions her. Youmi's support would also mean Nama could get out from under her advisors' thumbs, as she would have a strong, confident ally who wouldn't be cowed by them.

On the other hand, Youmi would benefit from Nama, too. She is young and inexperienced, but this means she could have a fresh perspective, too. The mountain clan is also much more military-minded than the sea clan, which likely means Nama has more military expertise.

Also they're both so hot. WHAT WHO SAID THAT.

    FLOWERLANDS

    [personal profile] theseuschip 2018-02-28 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Simon has read Doro's half-completed response to Nama's concern for his safety in light of the skirmishes, and since she and Doro are here, he will be arguing that the union of the empires would leave the Flowerlands bookended by powerful allies, and the Empresses now both extended family of its ruler.

This is the best way to protect it when it’s in the vulnerable position of geographically surrounded by two larger empires: give both a vested interest in its safety. Before the Empire of the Crashing Wave “appeared”, this wouldn’t have been a problem, but unless both empires are united, the Flowerlands will always be susceptible to attack by rebels angry about 'false empresses'.

Both empires covet the Flowerlands’ resources and this eliminates the tug-of-war between the three of them and the threat of a smaller territory being dominated by one empire, which would both be bad for the Flowerlands and bad for relations between the empires. Were the empires simply allies, each would still have something to gain by fighting for control of the Flowerlands.

The Flowerlands would remain an independent territory, so they don’t threaten the empires’ matriarchal values and don't lose any autonomy by Nama and Youmi's union; Doro being family of both empires’ rulers gives his lands greater security without any additional power or risk to the empresses. It also provides his people with trade opportunities as the Empresses’ citizens travel between their territories.

APPEASEMENT OF / PROTECTION FROM SPIRITS (Jin, Amado, Laphicet, Maya)

    [personal profile] pummelling 2018-02-28 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
    - Jin and Amado display feathers from the spirit Youmi's entourage encountered. Amado emphasizes the danger (that would've been worse in Ophelia's absence), the many injured he helped in the aftermath, and how avoidable angering the spirit was. Both stress they can't afford angering other powerful spirits, citing both bloodshed and the damage done to the Flowerlands and its resources.

    - Maya comes forward as a spirit medium and future master of her clan. Laphicet, "channeled" by Maya, magically manifests a floating orb of water. Maya understands the pressures of tradition and showing a strong front for rebels, but emphasizes the importance of balance and peace to Hanabirans and spirits alike. She shares Laphicet's insight as a spirit: more spirits, both benevolent and hostile, are likely to be present. They can either be corrupted into monsters by humans' negative actions, or become powerful allies in times of trouble if given offerings and prayer. Maya suggests honoring and protecting their land and praying for wisdom, protection, and guidance, and that a strong show of unity between the two empresses, combined with this reverence and balance, will benefit all people and spirits.

    - Jin concludes with (adapted) events from his world. When corrupted gods attacked his home, many nations united to keep the peace, but that peace was shattered when one kingdom allied itself with the gods. His home is still torn by hardship and war today. Uniting would prevent powerful evil spirits from pitting one Hanabiran nation against another, keeping all peoples safe.

Hi! Perhaps surprisingly, Veronica is actually looking to work with someone else who has more diplomacy experience than her to put forth an argument. I was thinking Daenerys because of the way things went on a log. Veronica could also do her own argument separate from that, but would be backing Dany's, too. Anyway, yes!

Rhys would want to focus on what Nama and Youmi could offer each other politically! For example, Youmi is a more experienced leader and Nama could learn from her, as well as have a strong leader behind all of the decisions she makes. Nama would also finally be able to get out from under her advisors' thumbs once she married Youmi. On the other hand, Nama is young and fresh with new ideas and likely more military experience, all of which Youmi could use.

If anyone else has anything political to mention (or just agrees with Rhys's points), I'm definitely up for grouping up!! c:

    FLOWERLANDS

    [personal profile] theseuschip 2018-02-24 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Having totally not read the guy’s mail, Simon gathered Nama is close to Doro, both of whom are listening to Ophelia's pitch, and that in addition to mentioning her attempt to reach out to Youmi, her letter to Doro expressed a lot of concern for the Flowerlands’ safety during the skirmishes, to the extent that in his half-written reply he had to remind her that sending Mountain Clan samurai would make matters worse. So, presumably, they’d want to consider that the union of the empires would leave the Flowerlands bookended by powerful allies, and the Empresses now both extended family of its ruler. The Flowerlands can’t very well just move after the Merging left it literally sandwiched between the two empires, so this is the best way to protect it when it’s in the vulnerable position of geographically surrounded by two larger empires: give both a vested interest in its safety.

As a bonus, both empires covet the Flowerlands’ resources and this eliminates the tug-of-war between the three of them and the threat of the Flowerlands just being swallowed up by one empire, which would both be bad for the Flowerlands and deny the other empire a slice of the trade pie.

The Flowerlands will be in the literal middle of all this, so there’s no avoiding them during all this cultural exchange stuff, but they remain an independent territory, so they don’t threaten the empires’ matriarchal values. They’re just more secure, and therefore also in a better position to trade. If Doro's amenable to it, they can sell that sweet, sweet Flowerlands dirt (and whatever else they have there??).

Ideally whatever of this is useful would be phrased in such a way that it isn’t super obvious that somebody in Ophelia read the stuff on Doro’s desk. Super ideally, somebody else likes the sound of this and is down to clown with saying it publicly in front of ethereal royalty from another dimension instead of Simon doing it (but whatever he’s a team player) (but for real though).

A UNITED FRONT (AGAINST WEIRD SHIT)

    [personal profile] pummelling 2018-02-28 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
As an addendum to points already raised in the military/wedding arguments, Jin would argue for the value of a united front in the face of Weird Magic Shit™, brought on by the Youmi escort group's encounter with the forest spirit. (BONUS POINTS, HE'S A NEGOTIATOR.)

    - Showing off feathers collected from the forest spirit, he'd mention that it was set off by bloodshed caused by these political disputes. Keeping the peace through unifying the kingdoms would prevent spirits and/or gods from being angered by their actions any further.

    - He'd also reference the forest spirit's spell over the creatures and animals in the forest, suggesting that there could be more spirits or beings with abilities beyond the capabilities or understanding of either empress. Joining both kingdoms into one could keep dealings with unknown threats consistent. Jin would use a simplified version of events in his world* as an example: when magical beings from a strange land attempted to conquer his country and surrounding countries, warriors from every nation united to drive them off and keep all peoples safe.

    - His final point, building on the second, would be that a formal joining of the kingdoms would prevent them from being turned against each other due to any outside influences. Citing events from his world** again: when, a generation later, one kingdom sought to pacify malevolent gods by basically throwing an ally under the bus, both countries were still nearly destroyed and foreign relations between the two remain fractured. Merging, moreso than allying, would keep this from being a thing.

*this is only sort of what happened, but the empresses don't need to know that
**this is also only sort of what happened, and the empresses STILL don't need to know that

If anyone wants to join in on this or add something else lemme know!! :9

    THE PEOPLE

    [personal profile] reposing 2018-02-24 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
While Alucard completely respects everyone else's arguments and agrees with the majority of them, he would additionally propose the benefit for their respective peoples. Not just in the overall cultures and how they can help each other (one clan's military, another's arts), but also in their safety, security, and the people's happiness.

Overall, neither clan want war, despite some of the rebels that instigated the coup with Empress Nama. A handful of rebels does not voice for everyone. In order to protect both kingdoms, it's best to unify them.

I don't have a fully proposed argument yet but once I get my brain in order I'll put something together.

Lissa would def hop aboard this argument, if you need more people! She'd add an anecdote of her own, in that her father continued war and it absolutely destroyed their people's happiness and trust, to the point that their people didn't trust the ruling family for years....all for the made up faraway nations that they're supposed to be representing, of course, and not these real countries from distant worlds.

If this doesn't actually go with the angle you're going for that's cool too, she'll just +1 everything said and lend her nonexistent weight as a princess.

laughing idk if you're still with this or not, but inuyasha would be for the people more than anything else regarding marriage

he buried a lot of the dead in the flowerlands, some of who were on both sides as well as in the middle, and that's what he'll add
