EVENT POST
SUMMARY They either heard it in passing or from a public conversation on the network. It's wonderful that the sun of Chantes has risen again, but what's next? Peace between the disgruntled humans and goblins, of course. Dislike peace talks all you want—some attempt has to be made if ALASTAIR is going to pluck you off of this planet.
Five main options in organizing a cease-fire are available to player characters (among your own ideas; if you have thought of something else, please ask about it or suggest it!):
1) Find half-goblin/half-human citizens of Chantes who are not affiliated with the Order of the Chimera. For a quick recap, there are people in Chantes who are neither all goblin or all human, but a mix between both of them. Understandably, they're having a bad time with the tensions between the two races being so high. But there are those who haven't resorted to joining the more aggressive Order that's taken to solving problems by, for example, blocking out the sun.
Rin's Servant Archer ( anti_altruisms) has been investigating the city in the background for quite some time, searching for the presence of these individuals. Any characters would be good for this option!
2) Search for humans or goblins who want peace between the two races and seek their help. There have to be people on both sides of the conflict more willing to put the fighting behind them, now. Maybe the sun has lifted their spirits and their hearts a little. It might still be difficult to find these pacifists, but they're probably out there.
Any characters would be good for this option! Non-human characters to speak to the goblins and human characters to speak to other humans may be especially helpful.
3) Send an envoy/a group of ambassadors to meet with the King and attempt to make some headway. There's some shady news concerning the King, to say the least, and ALASTAIR's last major encounter with the face of Chantes' royalty was beating down their guards and breaking recruits out of their jail. But the King is still the King, and so he must be dealt with for any peace efforts to go far. (Don't be surprised if they may not actually get, uh, very far.)
Characters that are good at holding their ground and able to defend themselves in the case of violence are probably best for this option! Rin—as well as other characters—will likely share the sentiment that they have their work cut out for them here, and they won't be in pleasant company. Additionally, any characters who know the King or are familiar with the castle.
4) Same as option 3, just with Graldia. The leader of the goblin army is another figure ALASTAIR might consider reaching out to.
Like with the King, assertive characters and characters who can defend themselves may be best for this option. Additionally, as with any interaction with goblins, non-humans might add some persuasiveness!
5) Attempt to work for peace with members of the Order of the Chimera. Yet another dangerous group. They're the ones whose leader Michel blotted out the sun in the first place. But as other ALASTAIR members have pointed out, the Order can't really be ignored. In the worst case scenario, another "Michel" will pop up... And it would really, really suck to try and get that sun back again, wouldn't it?
Any characters are good for this option, though they should possibly be able to defend themselves. Characters who know information about the Order (their past meeting, Michel) can contribute here.
WHAT DO I DO? Characters are free to talk to others in groups or individually. If your character would be interested in joining a group, feel free to discuss it in this entry before submitting your questions.
This would be an awful lot of threading, we realize, so we've come up with a solution. You (or your team) will write up a summary of where your character would go and what they would do. An example from a parallel universe: Alice and Bob decide to go question the werewolves, particularly any werewolves who happen to be out and about in the market place. They don't bother being polite or asking if they have a moment to chat. Instead, they yank one into an alley.
"Why do you hate the vampires so much?" Alice asks, unfriendly towards the werewolf. Bob plays good cop, being a little kinder.
"Would you be willing to work towards peace if someone would mediate?" he asks.
Regardless of what answers they get, they'll pop out of the alley and ask a few of the shopkeepers if they've noticed any werewolves who might be vampire sympathizers. They slide over a few coins to make sure they get an answer, and send letters to anyone who would be named asking for their assistance.
For types that might be more difficult to find - Order members or half-goblins - feel free to handwave that your character did some investigating to find them. After you submit the summary in the appropriate subthread below, you'll get a similar reply explaining the results they'd get.
Stay tuned for a very important follow-up network post coming up on the 30th! Please note submissions should be completed by or on the 30th (GMT) by the latest.
Also, a big thanks to defenceless for working with us on this event and their help in writing this up! |
HALF-GOBLINS WHO ARE NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE ORDER
no subject
Having paid particular attention to those who are tired of conflict and simply want the sun returned without further violence, he has sought out individuals who are neither human nor goblin, but a mix -- quietly, so as not to draw any unwanted attention to them.
In managing to locate one such individual who disliked the vengeful rhetoric of Michel as well as the Order, he asked if said individual would be willing to speak up and gather others of like-minded intent in the event that the sun was restored, to work together for a peace-minded solution. He cited that there were indeed efforts underway to restore the sun and that the only way to broker for peace is for all of those who previously lacked a voice to be given one, and for that voice to be protected -- which, he made a pointing of saying ALASTAIR would do.
Regardless of the answer he was given, Archer would express understanding that trust is something earned, not simply given, and that he would expect the actions of ALASTAIR members going forward to show that the people could trust them to help broker for a real solution to the problems existing in Chantes.
Following the restoration of the sun, he would again seek out his contact and ask for the support of those half-humans/half-goblins who dislike the Order and wish for peace. Will they come together and make their voices known and insist that they are indeed worthy of being heard?

What better to convince people to get along than to prove that when it comes to the blood flowing through their veins, everyone is pretty much the same?
Sieglinde will contact Doctor Wells, who she has been working together with to understand more modern concepts of chemistry as opposed to the "magic" she grew up learning. Together they will come up with the idea to examine the blood of half-goblins, "full-blood" goblins, and "full-blood" humans, under the theory that potentially the bloodlines may be mixed more than people in Chantes think, and that perhaps at this point most all humans have a touch of goblin and all goblins a touch of human and visa versa.
Kida also volunteered to help (if only to keep Sieglinde out of trouble, bless her), so they will have escort. Being not exactly the most morally upright of scientists, they will put feelers out for volunteers initially, hoping that those humans and goblins who want peace might contribute a small blood sample, but if people in general seem reluctant they will instead switch tactics to offering medical checks, one amongst goblins and one amongst humans, to gain a few samples of all sorts of beings in Chantes.
Once they have samples, they'll set to examining the blood samples physically and magically both to see what can be gleaned. They'll be working with magic-detecting tools and rudimentary microscopes to try and detect hints of blood mixing between the populations.
Sieglinde will leave to attempt peace negotiations at the castle halfway through, leaving Doctor Wells to continue in her absence, and she plans to ask Barry (who has super speed) to collect a bit of the King's blood undetected if he can- except things will go to hell when Michel takes over the castle, oops.
If any scientific or magic proof can be discovered that perhaps the people of Chantes (maybe even the King?) are more mixed than they think, they want to present that proof to the people- why fight against "the other" when the lines begin to blur?
And of course, it's only right that if they discover any disease or problems during the course of their "medical checks", that they actually follow up on that- good for ALASTAIR's image!

HUMANS OR GOBLINS WHO SEEK PEACE
(Humans)
Aqua will be venturing on her own through the city in search of peacable strangers (as vidya protags are apt to do); the park is perhaps an unexpected location to initiate such talks, being dedicated to the poisoned queen and all, but to her it's as good a place as any.
With the sun out, the fields are more populated than usual with children and accompanying guardians. Some of the younger ones attempt to braid pitiful flower crowns with the wilted lilies, while others are content to romp around playing outdoor games and such.
Aqua will be roped into these activities by the bolder children, and will eventually entertain them with a bit of her subtler, benign spells. (Healing a badly-scraped knee, for one.) This will likely draw the attention of the adults, who will approach her with much caution and perhaps even curiosity. Cue a careful discussion over the nature of her magic—she'll do everything to reassure them she means no harm, and hopefully the kids will vouch for her. Eventually she'll try to segue into the return of the sun, the general state of Chantes, and the safety of the children...
...A few green thumbs are out as well, trying to assess the state of the flowers and determine what they can do to regrow/revive what's been lost. Aqua will speak to them while assisting with a few gardening tasks, to ascertain whether their efforts are more for the sake of the actual lilies, or for the lost queen they symbolize. (Either way she'll try to collect their opinion of peace with the goblinfolk.)

Humans
Nico and, when she's not appealing to the goblins, Olivia will be going around trying to generally spread goodwill. Sometimes, this will be simply approaching people in at least the safer parts of town or chatting with vendors in the trade district as they browse/shop; sometimes, they will actively attempt to gather a crowd through their respective performances on various street corners, Nico announcing them with her megaphone. Olivia's actions are much the same as with the goblins, of trying to figure out their temperaments before broaching the topic and offering to do just about anything (though if it's anything too extreme Nico will intervene and attempt to smooth-talk their way out of it by acting innocent). On Nico's part, she'll mostly be acting as though she's just talking or doing normal fan meet-and-greet stuff like signing autographs/shaking hands/etc., which she's done from time to time as she's built up her idol career here, and she'll be putting double effort into seeming as cute and innocent as possible, but she'll be liberally peppering her conversations with true or made-up rumours about the goblins, more or less boiling down to goblins doing things that are nice and friendly, and being just as happy to have the sun back as any human, and wanting the conflict to end as much as anyone. Because we all just want to conflict to end, right? She won't be talking about the goblins to every person she meets, but one or two of these rumours will come up more often than not.

goblins... late without starbucks...
They look like this.
The benefits listed on the other side of it will consist of the following (and more):
Hopefully, this'll encourage goblins who want to seek peace to open up discussions with those who are apprehensive about having peace with this icebreaker. If Gintoki comes across goblins who are hesitant about making peace, he will go into more detailed conversation about this and dare not start a fight if they disagree with him, but turn the other cheek.

With both groups, Rin is pointed in bringing up the discussion of peace, though she's sure to shy away from causing overt discomfort. While she is direct, she understands she has not lived their lives. She's likely to listen to the history of Chantes, stories and opinions concerning the conflict, what individuals themselves believe can be done to resolve the situation, if they even care to resolve it... anything. Rin's just a little more in people's faces about considering peace than she was before, now that the sun is out.
(She does make it clear she doesn't really care if they're going to call her a traitor, either. Ah.)
In between the more "grown-up" business of peace negotiating, however, Rin finds herself appointed by chance as the temporary caretaker of a group of children. Initially she just screamed at them a lot, finding a mix of goblin and human and goblin-human children playing together in a small clearing located along the edge of the woods. Didn't they know how dangerous it was? Did their parents know they were out here? Somehow it ended up with Rin relegated to supervisory duty, resting on a nearby hill and watching over them—not only because of wild animals, but also because of the social climate. When Steven tags along with her following some of her rounds inside the city or through its outskirts, he's liable to mingle with the children and even suggest some new games they could play.
The children take an interest in the pair's free use of magic around them. Both Rin and Steven can heal small injuries—although Steven's method is, um, a bit creative—and magic makes for fun sparkles in the air that catch the sunlight and glitter, a beautiful crystal ball to kick around, colorful flowers they can loop around their wrists to braid friendship bracelets. Steven leads the children in plenty of catchy songs about peace.
The topic of peace and the state of Chantes do come up from time to time, but from a child's perspective. Rin and Steven are pleasantly supportive of being nice, kind, and friendly to others, no matter who they are or whether they're goblin, human, or a combination. After all, their little playgroup contains goblin kids, human kids, and half-goblin/half-human kids, and they manage to have tons of fun.
MEETING WITH THE KING
no subject
ALASTAIR recruits interested in coordinating with Rin to meet with the King will split themselves into two groups, with Rin, Saber, Aqua, Alice, Sieglinde, and Gilgamesh entering first. This initial composition is intended to lower the king's guard and dissuade him from dismissing a second negotiation attempt with the remainder of the recruits (Julius, Ban, Riku, Levi, and Barry), who will arrive either later in the day or on the following day to continue to convince the King to pursue peace. All group members will approach the castle in as subdued a manner as possible. Saber and Gilgamesh will attend the second group strictly for support. Gilgamesh will distract any hostile guards as needed and attempt to "parley" passage to the king's chambers. Absolutely everyone in both groups will be dressed to the nines and looking
Rin will promote the idea that peace is more logical than continued conflict, especially when peace was present a few years ago and humans and goblins are genetically compatible. Saber would argue that the prosperity of the kingdom is far more important than any grudge. Aqua would focus on the state of the city and its people. Sieglinde will advocate rational arguments emphasizing loss of life and potential fallout. Alice will be on security duty and mention the plight of Chantes' children. Gilgamesh will appeal to the king as fellow nobility and stress that one cannot rule in the midst of chaos.
Presuming another group will not be turned away, they will enter and attempt a second round of arguments. Ban will be on security duty and focused on magical disarmament in case of emergency. He may speak up for the goblins if they are named as the problem, voicing the fact that they were only responding to armed threats from humans. Julius will bring up political tensions between the humans and the goblins. Riku will be on standby to assist with shielding if escape becomes a necessity. Levi will emphasize it is to the king's benefit to cut his losses to avoid outright revolt. Barry will make an emotional appeal and suggest that a better future for everyone is in store with cooperation from both sides (in addition to covertly collecting a blood sample from the King for Sieglinde to later analyze, if this is possible). A tiny emerald owl familiar of Rin’s will also accompany this group and Rin and Sieglinde will be waiting outside the castle to provide immediate assistance if violence breaks out.
Saber and Levi will lead the first and second groups, respectively. Overall, the aim is to promote rational, effective, and nonviolent discussion in an effort to sway the king to the group’s favor—and there are plenty of strong personalities among the recruits. Combat will only be considered as a last resort and escape will be prioritized in such a scenario.

GRALDIA
no subject
Shadow will take the lead and ask the question he really wants to know the answer to; if humans and goblins had a good thing going, why did the goblins assassinate the human queen? That seems like a very poorly thought out choice. He will follow up with a second question, asking what it would take, in Graldia’s opinion, to bring peace between the two races so that they, these strange foreigners, can hurry up and get out of their hair and off their planet.
By then Ramir will have thought of the perfect question and asks, bright and full of hope, if she can have a sword. Preferably one of Graldia’s. And will she sign it? Shadow resists the urge to groan and facepalm until they’re out of Graldia’s sight.

THE ORDER OF THE CHIMERA
no subject
Riza Hawkeye will provide some information on the Order to help locate at least one base where members will be present (Arthur hopefully among them.) Her motive will be to seek out Arthur in hopes of convincing him to find Michel and work out a compromise. Though she won't back up Wells's subtle threats, her demeanor - and the guns at her hip - suggest she's not against more violent methods if need be.
Julius, being a diplomatic type of guy, will join them as well. Julius in particular will look to questioning Delia Faver further and specifically discuss the future of Chantes. He'll mention restoring peace and bringing the sun to Delia. She's the easiest member for him to approach because they've spoken once before. Julius will take a business approach to this and ask questions directly without beating around the bush.

For the King especially, I was thinking it would be a cool idea to get together a small group of ALASTAIR recruits ready to show the King what's what: powerful people, persuasive people, everyone dressed up all fancy, you name it. A handful of battle-minded characters might be helpful as—the muscle. If you're interested in being a part of a group for the King, let me know!

since it's tough to do group threads, i figure whoever wants to be involved in option #2 can do the speaking/investigating in groups of three or pairs, but then all come back together to share notes in one big group or something! depending on how much interest is gathered, of course!

Nico's going to be trying to keep a lot of the fanfare pointed at herself as she does so, because of course she is, but she can recognize the value of having help from a fellow charismatic entertainer (or so Nico would say they have in common). In return, the instincts Nico has developed in the idol culture of Idols Must Be Pure!!! may help her cut Olivia off from over-sweet-talking (though she won't likely be around to help on the goblin side, as Nico has heavily invested in the human side over the goblin side since the goblins weren't interested in her performances).

Sieglinde figures that, since it's proven the species can interbreed, that it's worth investigating whether those children are sterile. If not, if there are any "pure" humans or "pure" goblins left, really- or if it's situation where a lot more people than they think have ended up 1/8 human or 1/16 goblin and what have you.
After all, what better way to try and get people to get along than reveal that you're all kind of related at this point? Sieglinde would appreciate the help of anyone, really, since not only would fellow science and magic types be great to help analyze, but she needs to be carried around herself, and it's good to have people good in a fight in case sensibilities get offended.
Takers? This would fall into Option 1 firstly!

I am really, really interested in following the thread about the Queen to its fullest conclusion. Phoenix may thus attempt to try to create a unifying faction between humans and goblins by poking at contradictions about the murder of the queen and raising suspicions, since Phoenix is convinced that peace is impossible without knowing the full truth behind her death. If anybody hasn't burned their bridges with the human side yet, would they be willing to help him out with this? He can hit up goblins, but not so much humans right now.
Team Morally Grey?
Problems:
-He doesn't really know much about the Order or who is involved with it.
-He is one lone man and he doesn't believe a single person will be enough convincing in this situation.
I'm thinking for this there be a handwaved communication post where he will seek out anyone who has had contact with the Order or with Michel, and arrange for them to find some top tier members so they can go and speak with them about this nonsense. Wells himself won't be very polite about it in the meeting though - basically he wants to make sure when they leave this planet, there isn't going to be another "sun is blocked out" type incident or some shit.
Ideally a group of this nature should be small (probably 5-8 people at most) and should also be willing to be serious about making sure the Order doesn't cause trouble. Wells himself is able to fight if the chance arises.
SO any morally ambiguous types who may have some Order info want to go to their front door and tell them not to fuck shit up again?

The short timeline on this makes planning a bit difficult but if you had anything specific in mind I'll be home all of tonight and most of tomorrow, so I'm happy to hash things out with you. If you wanted a larger group of people ICly, I can probably nab some people off my timeline too who are freer.

She'll be bringing along Olivia for part of it, but since Nico is 100% concentrating her efforts on the human side of things since she's probably been identified as very, very human, she will have time for other collaborators (or bodyguards since she is useless at self-defence) while Olivia is working on the goblin side of things. Hit me up if you're interested!
